Recently, the relevant departments in Korea finally announced the specific implementation instructions for the new standard for lithium battery certification in Korea, and the standard transitioned from the well-known KC 62133:2018 to KC 62133:2019. According to the regulations, the new version of KC 62133:2019 will be officially implemented on September 6, 2019 （possibly delayed）. At that time, the Korean issuing authority （KTC/KTL/KTR） can only issue the KC certificate of KC 62133:2019. The 2015 and 2018 certificate applications will no longer be accepted.
WALTEK The following will answer questions about the differences between the new and old versions of the Korean lithium battery standard and the corresponding CB standards, certificate updates and applications.
1. What are the main differences between KC 62133:2015 and KC 62133:2019?
Application: Applying for the 2019 version of the KC certificate requires confirmation of the end product of the lithium battery before the application, and there is no such step when applying for the 2015 version of the KC certificate.
Test: If the end products of lithium batteries are mobile phones, tablets and laptops, the 2019 version requires the following three tests:
1) Vibration test (battery pack): Refer to the sixth edition of the UN38.3 report for this test.
2) Mechanical shock test (battery pack): Refer to the sixth edition of the UN38.8 report for this test.
3) Overcharge test (cell): This test can refer to the UL1642 abnormal charge test.
Note: For lithium batteries in other portable devices, as before, there is no need to add the above three tests.
2. Using CB transfer, should I use IEC 62133: 012 or IEC 62133: 2017 version?
According to the latest notice, only CB of IEC 62133:2012 version is still accepted to apply for KC, and IEC 62133:2017 version is not accepted.
3. When using the 2012 version of CB to apply for KC 62133:2019, what should be paid special attention?
For lithium batteries used in mobile phones, tablets and laptops, there is a need to increase Korean bias in CB (KR_ND_IEC62133C); for lithium batteries used in other portable devices, this is not required in CB.
1) Test standard: KC 62133:2015
- Corresponding IEC standard: IEC62133:2012
2) Test standard: KC 62133: 2019
- Corresponding IEC standard: IEC 62133: 2012 + KOREA ND (ie 2012 version CB + Korea deviation)
Note: This Korean deviation KOREA ND is for lithium batteries used in mobile phones, tablets and laptops.
4. After the introduction of the 2019 version of KC 62133, has the 2015 version and 2018 version of the KC certificate that has been issued expired?
Will not. The KC certificates issued by KC 62133:2015 and KC 62133:2018 will remain valid unless the holder voluntarily cancels or is forcibly cancelled by the Korean issuing authority.
5. If the existing KC certificate is 2015 or 2018, will it be forced to upgrade to 2019 after September 6?
If there is no change in the product and the information of the original certificate has not changed, you do not need to upgrade to the 2019 version of KC; however, if you submit the KC report application, you need to upgrade the standard.
6. Is the KC certificate after applying for KC report in 2015 or 2019?
Older versions of KC certificates, once reported, need to be upgraded to the latest standards. If it is an old KC certificate for lithium batteries used in mobile phones, tablets and laptops, once the product changes, KC technology changes are required, and the vibration test, mechanical shock test, and battery overcharge test must be added. After testing the content, it can be upgraded to KC 62133:2019; if it belongs to CB-KC transfer project, ie MOU project, you need to add Korean bias in CB, and then use CB after report to upgrade to KC 62133:2019.
7. KC 62133:2019 will only be implemented next month. Can you apply now?
Yes. Now you can apply for the 2019 version of the KC certificate.
8. How long does it take to issue a KC certificate for the 2019 version?
If you are using CB transfer, you can get the KC certificate within two weeks after the information is complete.
